Summary of proposals

Bus route 188 operates 24 hours a day between North Greenwich bus station and Tottenham Court Road. Our proposal relates to its line of route between bus stop MP on Blackwall Lane and North Greenwich bus station, as shown in the map below.

As we prepare for the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel, Tunnel Avenue is planned to become a two-way road along its entire length.

Once this is the case, we propose to restructure route 188 to serve Tunnel Avenue two-way, rather than Millennium Way.

As part of this proposal, bus stops MT and MW on Millennium Way would no longer be served by route 188. Instead, bus stops on Tunnel Avenue would be served, including existing stops MU and MV.

Additional bus stops on Tunnel Avenue would also be required and are shown on the map for indicative purposes.

Picture of a route 188 busChanges to the local road layout associated with the Silvertown Tunnel scheme are expected to make Tunnel Avenue available two-way for vehicles along its length.

This creates the opportunity for improved public transport access to the west side of Greenwich Peninsula, an area increasingly being redeveloped, with the introduction of a two-way bus service for the first time.

Our proposal aims to improve access to the bus network on the west side of the Greenwich peninsula in cost-effective way, and with minimal negative impact.

As well as providing local links to North Greenwich station and Greenwich town centre, the proposed re-routeing of the 188 would provide 24-hour connections to central London with frequencies of up to every 10 minutes.

Currently route 108 serves Tunnel Ave in one direction only, although it is presently on diversion while Tunnel Avenue is re-designed. We expect the 108 to continue serving Tunnel Avenue in future when travelling towards Stratford.
