Bradford Interchange Station Access Improvements – Internal Improvements

Please note that this consultation has now closed. Thank you for taking part. Responses are now being analysed and the results will be posted here as soon as they are available.

Introduction

Bradford is set to benefit from a series of transport schemes aimed at transforming the city centre and making it easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

Included in these schemes are improvements at, and around, Bradford Interchange, to transform access to the area and improve the Interchange as a key gateway to the city.

Alongside the new access route from Hall Ings, facilitated by the demolition of the NCP car park, improvements are also being proposed inside the Interchange to improve the passenger experience. In this engagement, we would like to know your views on the proposed internal improvements and external cycle hub.

The schemes, which are all at different stages of development, are being delivered in partnership by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council. You can find out more about the Bradford transport schemes here.

This engagement

We are planning to bring forward a series of improvements to the look, feel and passenger experience inside the Interchange and we now want to ask about your views on them.

You can also view the results of previous completed consultations on the exterior of the Interchange, including a new walkway entrance from Hall Ings, relocation of the taxi rank and new public space by clicking on the links for our earlier consultations in July-September 2021, and November 2022. The scheme is funded by the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund (TCF).

How can I get involved?

On this webpage you will find information to help you understand what internal improvements are proposed.

We would like your feedback on the proposed plans inside the of the Interchange. We recommend you first look at the layout plans and the visualisations, as well as reading the plans below and the frequently asked questions, before you complete our survey.

We will also be holding some face-to-face events where you can find out more about the proposals from the project team and ask them questions. These will take place in the Interchange on the downstairs concourse on:

Tuesday 15 August 2023 at Bradford Interchange 10am - 2pm

Wednesday 23 August 2023 at Bradford Interchange 2pm - 6pm

The aims

The aims of the Bradford Interchange Station Access Improvement scheme are to:

  • Improve the experience of using the Interchange to encourage more people to travel by train, bus, walking and cycling

  • Create a high-quality pedestrian access to the Interchange which would dramatically improve how it connects with and ties into the heart of the city centre

  • Create a new open and landscaped pedestrian approach to the Interchange, transforming the arrival in the city centre for visitors to City Park, Broadway and the emerging Cultural Quarter

The proposals

All proposals are for the downstairs concourse of the Interchange. No improvements are proposed for the upstairs concourse as part of this scheme.

  • New modern seating and acoustic trees

To improve the look and feel of the Interchange, new modern seating will be added just outside Greggs, and acoustic trees will be installed next to the new seating to provide light and help absorb background noise.

  • New digital screens

To improve the accuracy and accessibility of information, the current bus real time information screens would be replaced with new digital screens on the downstairs concourse outside Greggs. The current rail real time information would not be replaced.

  • Safety, security and accessibility improvements

To improve the safety and security of the Interchange new internal and external lighting will be introduced. Tactile paving by the stairs, edge colour contrasts and lit handrails will also be introduced to assist people with visual impairments.

  • Improved wayfinding and signage

To improve accessibility we are proposing improved signage to better direct people to platforms and facilities.

  • Additional facilities

A multi-use quiet room will provide people with a peaceful private space and can be separated into two multi-faith prayer rooms, each with washing facilities.

A new ‘Changing Places’ toilet (providing additional features to support people with disabilities) will help make the interchange more accessible for all.

The vacant travel centre will also be refurbished into a new attractive retail unit to encourage retail opportunities within the Interchange.

  • Sustainability

Proposals include improvements to make the Interchange more sustainable, including sustainably sourced materials and any new toilets will be reduced-flush to contribute to Bradford Council’s ambitions of achieving net zero carbon across Bradford District by 2038.

  • A new cycle hub

A new cycle hub would be installed opposite the entrance to the Interchange, along the back wall where taxis currently exit the taxi rank.

The cycle hub is planned to have:

  • Space for 71 standard cycles

  • Space for four adaptive cycles

  • A hub equipped with tools to complete basic cycle maintenance

  • Additional safety features including CCTV

The benefits

The internal improvements proposed would deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose transport hub for the district and for visitors, including those attending the Bradford UK City of Culture 2025 celebrations. They will complement other external improvements and a new access point from Hall Ings to create a new, attractive gateway to the district.

Planned improvements to the Interchange will integrate with a series of other major changes currently being implemented to improve the environment in Bradford city centre through the Walking and Cycling Improvements Scheme. Alongside other projects including a new live music venue, Bradford Live, the new Darley Street Market, the Top of the Town environmental improvements and planned new City Village, the heart of Bradford is being transformed to provide new opportunities for the people of the district.
