Thank you for your input and helping to shape the new Treeby Community and Sports Centre.

Background

Based in the town centre on the corner of Torwood Avenue and Clementine Boulevard in Treeby, the new community and sport centre will service the forecasted 7,750 plus residents living in Treeby and 3,200 plus residents in Jandakot. Its location next to cafes, shops and other town centre attractions will support the development of a vibrant community hub, while providing flexible and functional community spaces that offer a variety of different uses to the community.

The City has been working with the community, key stakeholders and a reference group to develop the designs for the new centre.

You Said

In early 2019, we asked our community what spaces the Community and Sports Centre should provide and what they would like to see. Input from residents groups, the local community and Stockland have been used to develop a draft design for this new facility. Feedback highlighted a desire for open space for playing sports, indoor rooms for all cultures and ages, opportunities for fitness classes and sessions, community events and music practice. There was a preference for space where children can play and public artwork that has an environment theme. Click here to view the summary (community feedback phase 1).

This feedback helped to shape the concept design for the New Treeby Community and Sports Centre. The concept design was advertised from late April to late May 2020, and your comments on the concept design were invited. The page was visited over 1000 times and artist impressions of the building were viewed over 400 times. The majority of feedback on the concept design was positive, with 96 per cent of the 27 respondents indicating they were happy with the concept. We Did

The Treeby Community and Sports Centre will be a district level facility that is intended to serve a variety of local activities with multifunctional spaces that can be booked, such as wet spaces for arts and crafts. The facility also includes clubrooms, change rooms, a playground and toilets to enable sport and recreation activities, as well as personal trainers and fitness instructors to book and run health and wellbeing sessions.

The new Treeby Community and Sports Centre will complement the nearby Cockburn ARC (located less than 4km from Treeby, which is a regional level facility that caters for widespread sporting and recreational needs such as swimming, basketball and badminton). Please read the FAQ or detailed engagement summary to find out more.

Detailed design of the new Treeby Community and Sports Centre will be undertaken in 2020, before construction commences in mid 2021. Completion of the new Treeby Community and Sports Centre is anticipated in 2022.

Who will own the ‘club’ featured throughout the design? Will this be open to all community members or ran by a private group such as a football club?

Lauren33 asked almost 4 years ago

An expression of interest process was conducted from January to March 2019 to enable existing clubs and aspiring clubs to apply for a seasonal arrangement. The submissions were assessed on merit and contribution to the wider community, with the successfully elected club being Fremantle Roosters Rugby League Club.

Groups or residents can also book the facility if they wish to do so, which increases the types of activities and programs available to local residents.

In October 2019, the City formed a Community Reference Group (CRG) with individuals and groups who expressed an interest in running programs and activities at the centre through the above mentioned consultation, to act as an advisory body for the project and help inform the concept design development process.

There is an opportunity for different groups, clubs, individuals, or commercial operators to run programs and activities. There has been a wide range of interest from different individuals who look forward to booking the facility to run activities.

Aside from numerous playgrounds already available in the area, the concept design includes an area with an enclosed children’s playground at the facility which is connected to Activity Room 1.  This space can be hired for such activities as playgroups, parent groups and birthday parties.

Commercial operators can also book but will have a restricted amount of time to access to enable not-for-profit groups to have equitable access.

Will there be a pool that can be utilised by both adults and children for exercise and recreation including the new primary school students being able to have swimming lessons there?

No. The Treeby Community and Sports Centre is a district level facility that is intended to serve a wide range of activities with multifunctional spaces that can be booked.

The Cockburn Aquatic Recreation Centre is a regional facility that provides specific aquatic and gym facilities for a large population catchment, and is conveniently only 4 km from Treeby.

Is there any suggestion or feedback from other community members to include cricket pitch in sports ground area?

Mihir asked almost 4 years ago

Hi Mihir, thanks for the question.

An expression of interest (EOI) process was undertaken by the City during the 2018/19 financial year, for sporting groups to utilise the new Treeby Reserve, which is located adjacent to the new Treeby Community and Sports Centre site, and was constructed by Stockland Pty Ltd (to be eventually handed over to the City).

Two expressions of interest were received through this process from the Phoenix Lacrosse Club and Fremantle Roosters Rugby League Club, both winter sporting clubs. Both were strong applications, however the winter tenancy was awarded to the Fremantle Roosters Rugby League Club, who as part of their submission requested the provision of two rugby pitches. In order to accommodate this request due to the size of the reserve, the rugby pitches are required to run east-west as per the attached site plan.

As cricket wickets are required to have a north-south orientation, if one were to be installed at this site, it would cross over the rugby field boundaries and create a safety hazard for rugby teams using the pitches.

Please be advised also that as part of the formal Expression of Interest process, the City did not receive any applications from summer sports (including cricket) to use Treeby Reserve.

We hope this information is helpful.
